WHY KNOT?

Why Knot is a witty spiral zine written and produced that explores topics that causes one to go through a down whirl spiral. Volume one explores the mind of an unmarried woman who is constantly asked why she has not married yet.

THE PURPOSE
A study project created with the purpose of using wittiness to explore serious topics of marriage. This project had to physically showcase the spiral that the author (me) faces within their narration of their struggle.
THE STRATEGY
Looking at existing spiral zines and try to recreate the shape while also ensuring that the readability is accurate when actually produced and cut.
The poster sized zine before being cut and folded into the final product.
THE PROCESS
Why Knot? is a spiral zine that is text based on the front of the zine with visual imagery on the back to showcase the knot that is being unwound similar to the narrative.
Prototyping was key in order to bring this project to life. Cue cards were used originally in order to determine how to create the poster and arrange the text to create a functioning and legible zine.
Approximately four prototypes were made with the cue cards before finalizing the final format for the zine. Prototypes were made prior to printing to determine how to accurately fold and cut the zine also.
Imagery of the back of the zine (the unwinding knot) was hand drawn on a tablet which was then added onto the Indesign file to help solidify the text.
THE LESSON
The layout of the text and page orientation differs in a spiral zine in comparison to a book layout that I have previously designed. Due to this, I was able to learn and understand how a spiral zine is produced. Prototyping multiple times helped to prevent production errors of the final product.
